My CHI 50 students organized a proyecto comunitario titled "El Talento es Poder" at UC, Davis.  This proyecto was a talent show for Raza students.  Students performed talents suc as singing, poetry, and dancing.  There was a special Son Jarocho performance by SEMILLA.

June 2, 2009

My CHI 50 students organized a proyecto comunitario titled "Quebrando Stereotypes con un palo."  This proyecto explored the stereotypes that have been placed upon Chicanas/os.  This group formed "El Teatro Estudiantil" and performed El Teatro Campesino's "Los Vendidos" acto.  There was a piñata breaking session, where my TA, Bayo, experienced for the first time this awesome Chicano tradition.

June 4, 2009

My CHI 50 students organized a proyecto comunitario titled "100 Estudiantes Dijeron."  This proyecto was a game show inspired by "Family Feud" and the Mexican version "100 mexicanos dijieron".  100 UC, Davis were surveyed on their knowledge of Chicana/o culture and 6 Raza student organization faced each other in competition.  Mujeres Ayudando La Raza (MAR) was the winning organization.  The main price was a serigraph of César Chávez that I donated.

Today, I participated in two events:

Raza Youth Conference at Woodland High School
My CHI 50 students organized this conference as part of their Midterm.  They had Danza Azteca Miktlantekutli blessed the event, several workshop presenters including myself, a student panel y comida gratis!  I took a screen and printed some shirts for my students.  We had a small turn out, but it was empowering for those present.  Buen trabajo!

The Imperial Academy/ Neoliberal University Symposium
I was invited to participate in this symposium by a colega from the UCD Sociology Department.  I presented on my art and pensamiento.  I talked about my art as a tool of change and as a method of resistance.  It was a great event.  We talked about different ways to build coalitions and how to utilize the arts to fight the system and empower our communities.  Gracias Nati por la invitación!

May 28, 2009

Today, my CHI 50 students organized a proyecto comunitario as part of their Midterm.  They screened the documentary "Made in LA" about the sweatshops in LA and the struggle against Forever 21.  The event was well attended and we silkscreen t-shirts for the audience.  Another great event!

May 26, 2009

Today, my CHI 50 students organized a proyecto comunitario as part of their Midterm.  I have a 120 students in my Introduction to Chicana/o Culture and divided into 8 groups of 15 students.  Every group is responsible for organizing a project that deals with Chicana/o Culture (history, politics, education, music, art, humor, teatro, cinema, and literature).  The group that kicked off the proyectos organized a screening of the documentary about the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.  If you don't know who they are, they have been organizing for better wages and better working conditions in Immokalee, Florida.  As part of their struggle, they have boycotting companies that buy Florida grown tomatoes.  They are fighting to earn 1 cent per tomato bucket.  They have successfully organized against Taco Bell, McDonalds, Subway, Burger King, Whole Foods and right now they are organizing against SODEXO, a food supplier to most college campuses.  There was a conference call to two CIW members as well as a Son Jarorocho performance by SEMILLA.  My students are organizing a letter campaign to be delivered to SODEXO demanding that they sign the an agreement with the CIW.  About 80 people showed up to the event.  Muy buen trabajo!

May 5, 2009

Today, I had Mariachi Los Gallos in my Introduction to Chicana/o Culture class.  The whole class chipped in $5.00 dollars and that's how we paid the mariachi, grass roots style!  I am a firm believer that students must be immersed into the culture or the subject that they are studying about.  We must go beyond the books and lectures and experience the material and/or put the new found knowledge into practice.  My students had a great time and so did I.

May  2, 2009

Today we hosted the Barrio Art Community Art Day at Northwood Elementary in Del Paso Heights.  Four of mu students were responsible for organizing this event and I assisted and guided them along the way.  Mesa Maquilli Tonatiuh blessed the event in the morning.  We had free art projects for that community.  We had six different stations where families' made collages, corn husk dolls, masks, chalk art, rain sticks, and bird rattles.  We also had spoken word performed by Straight Out Scribes.  The vibe was great and the participating families were very creative.

April 24, 2009

Today, I went to the X Recital de Rondallas with Vicky, Erácleo and Judy.  It was an excellent event with beautiful music.  La Rondalla de Guadalupe hosted the event as the have been doing for ten years and in the same way they will do it for decades to come.  La Rondalla de Guadalupe invites rondallas from all over México, this year they brought rondallas from Juárez, Culiacán, Mexicali, Cd. Obregón and Los Angeles.  The event was perfect, very romantic and we had a great time.

April 18, 2009

Today, I was one of the keynote speakers for the "Cosechando Sabiduría Migrant Youth Conference."  I did a presentation of my artwork and I along some of my Barrio Art students facilitated a workshop for the conference participants.  I really enjoy talking to the younger generations about art, culture, history and politics; ellos son nuestro futuro y tenemos que cultivarlos cómo preciosas semillas para que lleguen a ser árboles con raíces fuertes.

April 13, 2009

Today, I had an interview for a part time temporary position at the Sacramento State's Spanish Department.  The position is to teach 3 classes dealing with the civilization, culture, and literature of México.  Now, I must wait until next week to find out if I am selected as the finalist.
March 30, 2009

I started teaching at UC, Davis today.  I'm teaching Chicana/o Studies 50: Introduction to Chicana/o Culture.  I have a total of 120 students, my largest class to date.  It feel good to be back at Davis!

March 26, 2009

I was the keynote speaker to the MEChA de UC Davis' Youth Empowerment Conference.  I talked to about 450 middle school and high school students.  I also facilitated to workshops to about 25 and 15 students.  The workshop was really informal and very personal.  I had the opportunity to meet, inspire, and motivate students to keep on representing for themselves, their family, and our people.  Gracias Mechistas de UCD!

March 23, 2009

I facilitated a workshop on Chicana/o art at the Sacramento City Unified School District's Chicano/Latino Youth Conference.  I talked about the responsibility of the Chicana/o artist to her/his community.  The talked was more like a keynote speech, because they put me in the CSUS Ballroom with about 100 students.  It was very impersonal in the sense that I was on a stage.  A lot of the students came and talked to me afterwards and we talked one on one.

March 21, 2009

Today, I went to the 9th Annual César Chávez March in Sacramento.  We marched from Southside Park to César Chávez Park.  There were about 1000 people.  It was great to see many familiar faces; people that I hadn't seen in a while and reconnecting with them.  The legacy of César Continues!

March 20, 2009

Today, I was one of three keynote speakers at the Sacramento State César Chávez Community Service Day.  Chuy Barela and I sang El Corrido de César Chávez with one my poems intertwined in it.  I talked about the importance of giving back to the community and putting our degrees in service of La Raza.  I also gave props to Ángel Barajas, and Josh Wood, who co-sponsored the legislation that I wrote in 2003 to establish such a day at Sacramento State.

March 14, 2009

Today, I went to the Language Academy of Sacramento's Food & Craft Fundraiser.  We presented the mural painted last semester by Barrio Art and LAS students.  The mural looks nice!  Barrio Art facilitated a workshop for the children.  We taught them how to make corn husk dolls.  It always feel right doing art in and with the community.

March 7, 2009

Today we went to San José Arena to see HBO's Boxing After Night.  My friend José Pérez's cousin, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero fought in this fight.  The Ghost is a fighter with Golden Boy Productions.  Overall, it was a good night.  Too bad The Ghost suffered a cut in his eye and couldn't continue the fight, everyone in the arena was pretty sad since most of them went to the fight to see him.  One boxer that is showing a lot of promise is Victor "Vicious" Ortíz, who KO his opponent in the 2nd round.

February 17, 2009

Today I facilitated a workshop entitled "Art of Resistance" at UC Davis sponsored by Students for Justice (SJP) in Palestine.  I printed t-shirts against the Israeli invasion of Gaza, which is a terrorist attack on behalf of the Zionist state of Israel.  There was a break in the rainy weather and I was able to print some shirts.  I left the screen with SJP members so they can print for those that did not come out due to the weather.

February 6, 2009

Today I facilitated two workshops on Arte revoltoso at the 15th Annual Chicana/o Youth Conference at Sacramento State.  The workshops were well attended and I established some contacts with high school counselors, teachers, and students.  From these contacts, I will do a couple of murals with my Barrio Art class and students from those schools in the near future.  I enjoy to motivate and share information with the younger generations about Xicanismo y cultura.

January 23, 2009

Tonight I was honored with the Social Justice Award presented by Freedom Bound Center/ SOL Collective for my work as an artist activista.  Even though, I do what I do because it needs to be done, it feels good to be recognized for the hard work and commitment to social justice.  ¡La lucha sigue!

January 9-11, 2009

This weekend I went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to the 16th Annnual MEXA Xicana/o Youth Conference.  MEXA de Cal Poly invited me to be the keynote speaker for the conference.  It always an honor and a pleasure to represent Xicanismo.  The Mexistas treated me really good, the only thing that I asked them was for gas money and a hotel room.  I also facilitated 3 workshops on Arte revoltoso at the conference.  At the end of the conference, the Mexistas purchased a 8 serigraphs from me, that money will be use to set up Taller Revoltoso in the next few weeks.

Victoria and I has an excellent time in SLO.  ¡Gracias Cal Poly MEXA!

January 2009

This month, I'm exhibiting at Art Ellis in downtown, Sacramento.  This is my 3rd time exhibiting there and I usually get calls and/or e-mails from people that I know that see my work there.  The exhibit is Art Ellis' front window and everyone driving on J Street can see it.  I exhibited 8 pieces that jump out at you while driving or walking on 25th and J Street.
